Toby Butt
Toby is fifteen years old and plays a variety of instruments, including piano, bass guitar and tuba. He started learning to play the p
iano and tenor horn at the age of nine, and on starting secondary school he moved from tenor horn to tuba, on the advice of his brass teacher. He has since discovered that this is one of the best decisions he has ever made, and it was on the tuba that Toby won the Future Champions Gold Award for the Oldham area.
Currently Toby plays tuba in his school ensembles, with the Oldham Music Centre in the Youth Brass Band, Youth Wind Band and Youth Orchestra, and he is often requested to play with local brass bands. His playing has taken him to such places as Germany and, last year, New York.
For the last year Toby has been studying at the Junior RNCM and is currently studying for his Grade 8. He studies under Les Neish, principal Eb Bass with the Foden's Richardson Brass Band. Toby also studies composition, which is something he hopes to do in the future alongside his playing. He would love to play with a Championship section brass band as well as pursuing a solo career.
