African Drumming Group
The Hackney African Drummers are a remarkably dedicated and talented ensemble that very much enjoy what they do and have set the standard for other young percussionists in the borough. Since its formation, membership of the group has inevitably evolved, with members leaving school and moving on. Nevertheless some of the original members, still return to act as mentors to the rest of the group and there are plans this year to establish a meeting once a month where all current and past members can come together and play. Since the ensemble was established, each member has grown in confidence and ability. Leadership skills have been developed and some members now even lead rehearsals and performances, under the guidance of their tutor.
Performances throughout 2009 included taking part in ‘Borough Beats’ as well as playing an essential part in the instrumental events for the annual Hackney Schools Music Festival in July. However the highlight for the group, was an opportunity Future Talent gave the group, to perform at the 2009 Philip Lawrence Awards in December. The ceremony took place at the BAFTA building in Piccadilly and the performance of the African Drumming Group was praised as dazzling entertainment by the event organisers and rewarded with a standing ovations from the audience!
