Sir Charles Mackerras has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an international conductor.  He is Conductor Laureate of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Conductor Emeritus of the Welsh National Opera, Principal Guest Conductor Emeritus of the San Fransico Opera, Conductor Emeritus of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

A specialist in Czech repertory, Sir Charles has enjoyed a life-long association with both the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and many aspects of Czech musical life.

He regularly conducts at the major opera houses and has built up a particularly close relationship with The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, The Metropolitan Opera New York, Welsh National Opera and San Fransisco Opera.

In addition to the many honours bestowed upon him by the British and Czech people, Sir Charles was recently named Honorary President of the Edinburgh International Festival Society.
