A day at the Halle

As part of the Development and Mentoring Programme, four Future Talent Musicians travelled to Manchester to spend a day at the Hallé.

The day started with a tour of Bridgewater Hall with the Hallé’s Education Director Steve Pickett, followed by the opportunity to watch the orchestra rehearsal and meet some of the Hallé’s musicians.  At the end of the rehearsal, Hallé conductor and Future Talent President Sir Mark Elder spent an hour talking to our musicians, giving them advice and guidance.  In the evening, some of them stayed to watch the orchestra perform Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, a new commission by Tarik O’Regan A Celestial Map of the Sky: 1515 and Holst’s The Planets Suite.

“Michael’s visit to the Halle rehearsal went really well, it ticked all of the boxes.  Steve Pickett was most welcoming and informative, he gave an animated tour of Bridgewater Hall and introduced Michael to Steve Magee the bassoon and contrabassoonist. Sir Mark Elder did an excellent mentoring session with the children sharing his own experiences, talking about the highs and lows of conducting and generally giving an insight into the life of a professional musician come conductor; Michael was touched by a lot of what he said.  Many thanks for giving Michael this opportunity, I feel Michael came away with a number of points that he will use in his personal and musical development”
