The African Drumming Group performs at The Philip Lawrence Awards

On 8th December 2009, the African Drumming Group performs at The Philip Lawrence Awards, which take place this year at the BAFTA building in Piccadilly to reward outstanding achievements in good citizenship by young people aged 11 to 20.

The national scheme recognises groups that are making a real contribution to their local community and the lives of others; and groups that promote respect and understanding of faiths, culture and communities internationally. The focus is on exemplary activities – examples of young people working together, promoting citizenship and overcoming the difficult situations some young people face.

The Awards were set up in memory of head teacher Philip Lawrence, who was killed in December 1995. Philip Lawrence inspired many young people, and the Awards commemorate his deeply held conviction that all young people are capable of achieving great things.

Since 1997, the scheme has supported over 1,000 young people in the UK
. Philip Lawrence Award winners are building confidence, promoting safety and promoting youth involvement, and reducing crime in over 80 communities nationwide.
